The play focuses on a troubled Southern family and the discord over their dying father's millions. Big Daddy is celebrating his 65th birthday and has cancer, but the doctor has deliberately and falsely told him he is in remission. His eldest son Gooper and his wife, Mae, have several children and are expecting to inherit Daddy's millions. Big Daddy's "favorite," Brick, is a washed up football star who's taken to drinking his das away since the suicide of his "best friend" a year earlier. He resents Maggie, his wife, and refuses to sleep with her because he believe's she had an affair with his deceased friend, but she remains devoted to him. Big Daddy is tempted to leave the estate to his eldest son, having provided the only heir's, but Maggie lies to prevent this, claiming to be pregnant.
